Mattresses Sent To LA. Flood Victims

From Baptist and Reflector

MORRISTOWN — Nolachucky Baptist Association disaster relief, based here, with help from Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief, is delivering four tractor trailer loads or about 236 sets of mattresses and box springs to Louisiana flood victims, reported Don Owen, director of disaster relief.

Owen learned of the need at the end of November from a ministry partner and Louisiana Baptist, Johnny Huffman of Covington, La. Huffman knew that Nolachucky Association had sent mattresses to Israel through the Harvest of Israel project of the association and First Baptist Church, Morristown.

Owen spread the word through his e-newsletter. Funds, about $24,000, came flowing in from Baptist associations, churches, and individuals, he reported. Also, he learned of used mattresses which several hotels near the Smoky Mountain National Park would donate.

Then Wes Jones of Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief arranged for about $8,000 to be given for new mattresses from Tennessee Baptist Disaster Relief funds given for Louisiana flood victims.

Equipment and drivers have been provided by Wallace Hardware in Morristown and Knox County Association.

The last load will be delivered the first of February.
